The Buzz: Now that the Ice Age
franchise is an incredible global success (did you know the last
installment made close to a billion dollars worldwide?) and
director/nurturer Carlos Saldanha has moved to Rio,
it's time for new faces behind and in front of the camera; among the
new arrivals are an Oscar nominee, an "American Idol" judge, and a
Canadian rapper. And Aziz Ansari, whose character will probably be
annoying.
The Buzz: Finally we get to
enter the criminal underworld that launched the careers of star Joel
Kinnaman and director Daniel Espinosa. And know (or remember) that Zac
Efron is looking to diversify his celebrity by starring as the young
drug runner in the proposed remake. European audiences will get a look
at the sequel late this coming summer.
The Buzz: If you feel as though the term "paranormal" has been tainted, the thought of the director of Buried
taking a less-expected approach to the genre might be worth your
interest. Reportedly more of a cat-and-mouse thriller between Sigourney
Weaver a Robery De Niro, it could be older audiences who gravitate to
the mysteries herein. Meanwhile, it's good to see that Elizabeth Olsen
has turned the initial Sundance hype into an ever-diversifying career.
The Buzz: Frédéric Bourdin's incredible real-life exploits were fictionalized in the Canadian film The Chameleon,
but Bart Layton's docudrama (Bourdin consulted on the projected by is
portrayed by an actor who bares an eerie resemblance) focuses on the
fateful set of circumstances that took him from a French children's home
to San Antonio, Texas, where he was accepted by a family as their son,
Nicholas, who went missing as a boy. Without revealing much more, it can
be safe that Bourdin isn't the only member of this family who is
misrepresenting themselves.
The Buzz: Might we see some sentimentality from Giorgos Lanthimos in his follow-up to the Oscar-nominated Dogtooth?
The subject matter, another unique narrative from the writer/director,
hints at an opportunity for more humor than we've seen from Lanthimos
thus far; it was present in Dogtooth, but folded into a thoroughly unnerving family psychodrama that kept me off balance throughout.
The Buzz: Someone once said the
best thing about seeing a bad Michael Winterbottom film is the fact
that you don't have to wait long for him to release another effort. And
to be fair, Winterbottom is usually more On than otherwise. But his
interpretation of the novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles is thick
through the middle and comes to an unsatisfying melodramatic end. But,
hey, already in a short career, Freida Pinto has worked with some of the
best established and emerging directors out there.
